A hidden gem community nestled within the reach of the populous City of Hamilton, Stoney Creek is be located on western Lake Ontario's south shore. Divided by a vast escarpment, the "Old Town" and new "Stoney Creek Mountain" combine rich history with geographic superiority to create a community worth discovering.
After a particularly explosive residential growth throughout the lower city in the 1970s and 1980s, the city of Stoney Creek came to life in 1984. By the 1990s and 2000s, the population began flocking to the west mountain. Eventually, in a 2002 Provincial Government decision, Stoney Creek, alongside Ancaster, Flamborough, and Glanbrook, merged with Hamilton to create the "New City of Hamilton".
Although approximately a quarter of Stoney Creek's population is foreign born, a recent census showed that it is home to predominately white Europeans (93%). As of 2006, the population is said to be just over 60,000 residents. Roughly 18% of the area affiliates themselves with a Roman Catholic religion in an otherwise nonspecific religious community.
The part of Stoney Creek known as the "Old Town", which exists below the Niagara Escarpment, is one of Ontario's historical treasures. During the war of 1812, the Battle of Stoney Creek went down in history as a forty minute battle in which a small number of British soldiers were able to overwhelm the Americans into retreat. Residents have commemorated this event with the preservation of Battlefield House and its associated museum, monument, and park.
Inhabitants of the Stoney Creek area hold dear to their hearts its superior geographic beauty. In contrast to the commercial & residential explosion above the Escarpment, lower Stoney Creek is home to thousands of hiking paths along the famous Bruce Trail and Lake Ontario. These trails lead to many exquisite waterfalls and picturesque parks within the confines of the city, including Fifty Point Conservation Area which holds a small craft harbour and camping.
As every well-established town should, Stoney Creek hosts both the Winona Peach Festival and the Stoney Creek Flag Festival each summer to serve up local music, food and crafts!
Fringing on the Niagara winery region, the Stoney Creek area in eastern Wentworth County has been an attractive option for buyers hoping to dodge the large land costs in neighbouring Hamilton. The affordability factor, in addition to easy access to the western GTA via the Queen Elizabeth Way and Burlington Skyway, has made Stoney Creek a contender among the fastest-growing parts of Hamilton.
