The City of Hamilton is a vast living space which houses many smaller communities, more specifically the sub-city of Dundas. Found tucked away in the "Wentworth Community", the Valley Town has a solid population in the mid twenty-thousand range consisting of mostly families and those of a younger generation. Dundas' location sits elegantly at the bottom of the Niagara Escarpment on the Western edge of Lake Ontario. Originally named "Cootes Paradise", the town dubbed "Dundas" in 1814 is a prime real estate location for many homeowners in the Hamilton area based on a multitude of factors.
Those who call Dundas home are proud of its distinguished beauty and sophisticated aura. Following the establishment of McMaster University, a renowned science-focused school in nearby West Hamilton, in 1930, the area became a bedroom community for the faculty and students of the educational institution. While existing as a suburb overflowing with intellectuals, it has successfully developed a thriving arts community filled with those for whom artistic expression is essential within daily life.
The love of arts can be felt throughout town in a variety of recreational facilities for the public. In 1964 a desire for growth within the community saw the establishment of the Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA), designed to attract like-minded individuals to educate themselves in the arts and flock to partake in the associated social aspects this facility would develop. More recently, in 1998, McMaster University added a full time diploma programme in unison with the DVSA. For those interested in viewing, rather than partaking, in the arts - Dundas has that too! Carnegie Gallery, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2010, is run by the Dundas Art and Craft Association. This breathtaking gallery is home to a vast array of social arts events ranging from art exhibitions featuring local and foreign talent, book readings, to concerts of all sorts. If it happens to be concerts that peak your interest, the Dundas Valley Orchestra is an amateur community orchestra which, after its founding in 1978 by Arthur Vogt, has continued to blossom and currently provides free concerts within senior citizens' residences and at other community venues. Their mission is to provide amateur musicians with the opportunity to improve on their musical talents and skills.
When you have a society which consists mostly of families, it is inevitable that sports will become integrated into everyday life. Dundas is home to the Dundas Blues, a junior ice hockey team with several age categories for those with youth in their homes. Fret not though, the community established the Dundas Real McCoy's for those athletes with more years on their belt. This senior hockey team is part of the Ontario Hockey Association's Major League and all games are open to the public.
Dundas maintains a small town feel, regardless of its connection to the "big city" of Hamilton. One can experience this serene comfort by walking one of the many trails, some of which lead to the infamous waterfalls that merit Hamilton with the title of "Waterfall capital of the world". Two of the most magnificent and commonly visited are Webster's Falls and Tew's Falls, both tucked away in the heart of the Valley Town. On any calendar day, you can find individuals hiking to Dundas Peak to overlook the entire city from the Bruce Trail. It is truly a sight worth experiencing for yourself.
Whether it is arts, sports, or geographical beauty that your family is searching for, the tranquil town of Dundas Ontario has it all.
